diagonally blowing monsoons, and the country’s wide range of altitudes
have given Sri Lanka a variation in climate and biodiversity normally
found only across an entire continent.

swathes of land have been preserved as sanctuaries by Sri Lankan royalty
– Mihintale, the world’s first reserve, was created here in the third
century BC. Now there are 100 areas of protected land in the country,

Wilpattu National Park
Wilpattu
National Park (Willu-pattu; Land of Lakes) is a park located on the
island of Sri Lanka. The unique feature of this park is the existence of
"Willus" (Natural lakes) - Natural, sand-rimmed water basins or
depressions that fill with rainwater. Located in the Northwest coast
lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka. The park is located 30 km west
Anuradhapura and located 26 km north of Puttalam (approximately 180 km
north of Colombo). The park is 131, 693 hectares and ranges from 0 to
152 meters above sea level. Nearly sixty lakes (Willu) and tanks are
found spread throughout Wilpattu. Wilpattu is the largest and one of the
oldest National Nature Parks in Sri Lanka. Wilpattu is among the top
national parks world renowned for its Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya)
population. The best time to visit Wilpattu is during the months of
February and October.

Belihul Oya
The River Belihul Oya, just 20km in length, originates on
Horton Plains National Park (1524m) high above, then flows, gushes, tumbles
& drops through an assortment of eco systems all the way to into modern
man-made Samanalawewa Reservoir. The river, watched over by series of mountain
peaks including Gon Molliya ("The Hump of an Ox") & Paravi
("Pigeon"), crates some very beautiful waterfalls in its downhill
path, including Baker's Falls on Horton Plains, Pahanthuda Falls & Demodara
Falls. Paddy fields surrounding the settlement are fed by streams from the
river.

The Chadar Trek or Zanskar frozen river trek is a winter trek in Zanskar Valley, Ladakh. The trek starts from Leh going through Shingra Koma, Tibb Cave, Naerak Camp concluding back in Leh. The 105 Km trek provides trekkers and hikers an amazing opportunity to trek on a frozen sheet of ice in subzero temperatures. The trek is operational during the months of January and February when the Zanskar river freezes into a solid sheet of ice.
ReplyDeleteLadakh has various treks and beautiful camping locations. What sets Ladakh apart for travelers is the Chadar Trek which is quite challenging yet mesmerizing owing to its scenic beauty. That one glimpse of the topmost sections of the Himalayas would certainly awe an individual because of its breathtaking view.
The temperature during the trek varies from around -5 to -20 degrees celsius and the trekkers would occasionally face steep rocks along with facing treacherous sections of the Zanskar River. While this trek would offer a lot of difficult challenges, to the maximum point of questioning oneself, one would find all the answers once you observe and become a part of the Mighty Himalayas. And trust us, it would certainly be a life-changing experience.
